Which price mode do I need?
Price formula, variant price, or personalization – how to pick the right mode before you create the configurator.
The price mode decides how the price is built in the store and which product template you need. You cannot change this after creating the configurator.
Decide quickly
Section titled “Decide quickly”| Your goal | Mode |
|---|---|
| Price depends on dimensions, area, or a formula | Price formula |
| Every combination should have a fixed price, including more than 3 option levels | Variant price |
| Engraving, text, upload, or a choice – the product price stays the same | Personalization |
Price formula
Section titled “Price formula”Ideal for blinds, fabrics, tarps, or anything priced by width, height, or area.
- Formula editor with variables from options, e.g.
[width] * [height] * 0.5 - Optional minimum price, rounding, and surcharges
- The app manages Shopify variants in the background
- Product template without the theme variant picker, price, and add-to-cart button – the configurator block takes over
Variant price
Section titled “Variant price”Ideal when you want to price every combination yourself, or when Shopify’s 3 option levels are not enough.
- Fixed prices per combination
- The app creates and keeps the required variants
- No formulas
- Same template as price formula: without theme variants, price, and add-to-cart button
Personalization without price change
Section titled “Personalization without price change”Ideal for engraving, initials, file upload, gift wrap, or a date picker.
- The selection is passed to the cart as a line item property
- The original product price stays
- No automatic variant creation
- Product template with variant picker, price, add-to-cart button, and the configurator block
Surcharges can be enabled optionally in this mode. Details are under Surcharges.
What you cannot mix
Section titled “What you cannot mix”A configurator has exactly one mode. If you need dimensions and engraving-only on different products, create two configurators.
